Juneteenth for Me

Juneteenth for Me

On June 19, 1865 two and a half years after the official Emancipation Proclamation was read, the enslaved population of Galveston, Texas was finally free. This is known as Juneteenth. For me, Juneteenth signifies Freedom, the day of Jubilee! It is a day to reflect on our nation’s history, and a day to remember and acknowledge the lag in justice for Black lives. As a woman of West African and Jamaican descent, born and raised in Queens, New York, I admittedly did not grow up celebrating Juneteenth. I learned about Juneteenth after attending a festival held at our local cultural …

What Juneteenth Signifies to Me

What Juneteenth Signifies to Me

For me, Juneteenth signifies African American freedom. This day commemorates the abolishment of slavery for my ancestors and recognizes the end to the brutality of being enslaved. I celebrate this day just as the Fourth of July is celebrated. As part of the celebration, I educate my children and family on the importance of the holiday. Celebrating diversity is important at the TMX Finance® Family of Companies because it can help eliminate unconscious biases. In general, a diverse workplace is more likely to understand an employee’s needs and come up with ideas to fulfill them. It also increases morale and instills a …

Juneteenth For Me

Juneteenth For Me

Growing up in school, I remember I had a pretty good knowledge of, and fascination with, history. I remember learning about the Boston Tea Party in 1773, the Civil War from 1861-1865, the Roaring 20s followed by The Great Depression in 1929, trench warfare during World War I, and so many other events throughout history. I also remember as a child always celebrating the 4th of July at my aunt’s house in Monroe, GA. It was my favorite holiday at the time because my aunt would always buy the kids a blow-up pool to swim in. Growing up, I learned …

Memorial Day – A Day of Remembrance

Memorial Day – A Day of Remembrance

“Today is the day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that no heroes will ever have to die for us again. It’s a day of thanks for the valor of others, a day to remember the splendor of America and those of her children who rest in this cemetery and others. It’s a day to be with the family and remember.” Ronald Reagan, 1986 Leading up to this Memorial Day, I reached out to several of our veteran and current military Team Members so we could share their personal stories on what this sacred day means …

We Salute Those Who SERV: Making the Transition to Civilian Life

We Salute Those Who SERV: Making the Transition to Civilian Life

As a Marine, I am accustomed to a fast-paced environment that poses many personal goal-oriented challenges and a constantly changing routine, to which I adapted to eagerly. So, when it came time for me to make the transition from a military career to a civilian career, a new set of challenges emerged that I wasn’t quite prepared for. Many of the jobs I found after leaving the military simply did not offer the same level of engagement that I came to rely on to be satisfied in my career. That’s why it was so important for me to search for a career with a …

The Journey to Freedom

The Journey to Freedom

Growing up, I didn’t see myself as being any different from my friends. There were not many of ‘my kind’ at the school I attended, but we all had something in common—freedom. The Vietnam War ended on April 30, 1975, with the fall of Saigon. On the evening of May 25, 1981, my parents boarded a 23-foot vessel along with many other passengers. This wasn’t any excursion you would imagine one wants to take, nor a dream vacation. The Port of Call was unknown. They hoped the destination was the Land of Freedom. My parents were one of hundreds of thousands of …

My Asian Heritage

My Asian Heritage

My name is Charlie Chan, Asian American and a General Manager for TitleMax® in Las Vegas, NV. I started with TitleMax® in California in 2016 and relocated to TitleMax® of Nevada in the middle of 2020. I grew up in Manila, Philippines, and was raised in two different cultures—Filipino and Chinese heritage—which I consider a blessing because I was able to embrace diversity early. The Philippines proudly boasts to be the only Christian nation in Asia with more than 86% of the population Roman Catholic1. Easter is one of the most important “Holy Weeks” as we remember Christ’s passion—his suffering, …
