Hispanic Heritage Month: Better Together When We Understand Our Differences

Hispanic Heritage Month: Better Together When We Understand Our Differences

I look forward to celebrating my Hispanic heritage with my family by enjoying live music and great food. Others can celebrate in the same way, using Hispanic Heritage Month as a way to learn about other cultures, try new foods, and get to know new people. Celebrating culture is important because we work better together when we understand our differences. I mentioned celebrating culture by trying new foods. One of my all-time favorite dishes is posole, a traditional Mexican soup. I love to eat it in the winter when it’s cold. You can add an assortment of toppings to the …

The Journey to Freedom

The Journey to Freedom

Growing up, I didn’t see myself as being any different from my friends. There were not many of ‘my kind’ at the school I attended, but we all had something in common—freedom. The Vietnam War ended on April 30, 1975, with the fall of Saigon. On the evening of May 25, 1981, my parents boarded a 23-foot vessel along with many other passengers. This wasn’t any excursion you would imagine one wants to take, nor a dream vacation. The Port of Call was unknown. They hoped the destination was the Land of Freedom. My parents were one of hundreds of thousands of …

My Asian Heritage

My Asian Heritage

My name is Charlie Chan, Asian American and a General Manager for TitleMax® in Las Vegas, NV. I started with TitleMax® in California in 2016 and relocated to TitleMax® of Nevada in the middle of 2020. I grew up in Manila, Philippines, and was raised in two different cultures—Filipino and Chinese heritage—which I consider a blessing because I was able to embrace diversity early. The Philippines proudly boasts to be the only Christian nation in Asia with more than 86% of the population Roman Catholic1. Easter is one of the most important “Holy Weeks” as we remember Christ’s passion—his suffering, …

Lead Like Women: Why I Choose to Empower

Lead Like Women: Why I Choose to Empower

Most women in leadership roles at the TMX Finance® Family of Companies inspire me. Despite their hectic lives, they get up every day with passion and enthusiasm for our industry. They get out of their comfort zone and venture into the unknown, all while remaining positive and bringing high energy.  They want to see everyone reach their full potential. They don’t seek to build their kingdom; they genuinely seek to build people! These are true leaders, and that is so inspiring to me! I’ve been with the TMX Finance® Family of Companies for seven years. I started as a Customer …

Black History Month 2021: Celebrating the History and Culture Series

Black History Month is an annual event honoring the many vital contributions of Black Americans, something the TMX Finance® Family of Companies is proud to celebrate. What started as “Negro History Week” in 1926, observed on the second week in February to honor Abraham Lincoln’s and Frederick Douglass’ birthdays, has turned into a month-long devotion to celebrating Black Americans. We honor diversity through celebrating the heritage and traditions of our Team Members. In turn, we leverage cultural holidays like Black History Month to inspire Team Members to learn more about the history, themselves, and their Team Members. To honor the …

When Hollywood Learned to Speak Different Languages

When Hollywood Learned to Speak Different Languages

Enrique Gonzalez serves as an expert movie critic and writes a weekly column for a local Hispanic news publication in Phoenix, AZ. In addition to his role as a General Manager at TMX Finance® Family of Companies, he has been a local radio and television personality, movie promoter, and most recently, a podcast host. At the beginning of the industrial film era most productions did not have audio. In 1920, the silent cinema was a universal cinema, so the nationality of the actors did not matter nor their voices. Really, the quality Hollywood was seeking were faces that looked good …
