#DefineYourDrive: Helping Others

#DefineYourDrive: Helping Others

To honor our veteran hiring commitment, TMX PROJECT SERV, we are recognizing veterans within our Company; sharing their transition into a civilian career and how their military experience has helped them succeed.

Submitted by: Jose Mercado, General Manager

I joined the U.S. Army Military Police Corps in 1984 and served until 1996, then served during Desert Storm with the 1st Cavalry Division. My time in the military changed my life, teaching me self-discipline and self-motivation. I also traveled the world and experienced many different cultures personally, which taught me that there is a whole other world out there that we rarely hear about.

After serving 12 years, I left the Army and became a civilian Police Officer. I served several years and then left law enforcement to begin working for one of the largest rent-to-own companies, where I stayed for 10 years. In 2014, I joined the TMX Finance Family of Companies to establish a career, where I plan to remain for many years because of the ability to help people in need. By constantly meeting new people, I have learned how to relate to many different cultures and personalities, and in turn, to respect their points of view. My drive to help others has made it a must for me to work in an environment where I can ensure individuals are being helped with their needs.

Although helping people comes naturally to me, one situation stands out in my life. When I was in the US Army Military Police Corps, I came upon a high-ranking officer involved in an accident where her car overturned and caught on fire. I tried to get her out but could not, and she asked me not to leave her alone. I held her hand and stayed with her until she arrived at the ER, where she passed. The doctors explained to me that the only thing that had kept her alive was the hope I gave her just by holding her hand and staying with her. I will never forget this incident.

Overall, my drive to help others has allowed me to build a strong rapport with my customers, understand their needs, help them through difficult times, and help find solutions to their problems. I sit and listen to them and try to help them see things from a perspective they may not have thought of before. The Company has truly given me the opportunity to put smiles on the faces of people who need our help!
